How Sleep Is Linked To A Longer Life

Today, people are living longer than ever. The average life expectancy has climbed to 73, with many passing that and living to be well over 100. Living a long, happy life should be something everyone aspires to, and it can be reached by living according to the healthy guidelines of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and getting plenty of sleep.

In fact, the health benefits of getting a good night’s sleep cannot be overstated, and it can even help you live longer.

Science Says Sleep Helps You Live Longer

It’s important to note that sleeping longer does not help you live longer. In fact, the opposite is true. Sleeping too much or too little has been found to be associated with a shorter lifespan.1 One study found that more deaths happened in female participants who consistently slept less than five hours but more than six and a half hours.

While it’s crucial to find the perfect sleep balance, research may have also found an answer to help you make sure you’re clocking in at the perfect amount of sleep in order to live a full life. Studies have also found that sleeping in on the weekends or your days off can help your body catch up on the sleep it’s missed out on during the week.2

So, feel free to turn that alarm off come Friday night. It could just save your life.

 

Why Too Much Or Too Little Sleep Is Bad For You

If sleep is so good for you, how can too much also decrease your lifespan? Just like with junk food, too much of a good thing can have negative effects. Sleeping for ten or more hours is considered too long and can negatively impact things like your BMI and can even lead to, or be a symptom of, psychiatric diseases like depression.3

 Seven to eight hours is the sweet spot for sleep and can help decrease stress and anxiety as well as boost your immune system.

Too little sleep (which is anything considered less than seven hours) not only increases your stress, but your focus, making you more likely to get into accidents or injure yourself.4

 

Getting It Just Right

Research shows that when you get the right amount of sleep, it increases your lifespan because your brain is able to stay alert and let your body know when it’s time to rest again. So, in addition to making sure you’re eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and exercising a few times a week, getting to bed at the same time each night puts you on the path to a long, happy life.

With the exception of your weekend snoozes, it’s easy to see why a balanced sleep schedule is just as important as exercise and diet. Following these healthy guidelines not only helps you potentially live longer, but feel better physically and emotionally, too.
