When you’re trying to get in shape, the first few days of training may feel like a breeze. You find yourself up and at ’em the minute your alarm goes off in the morning. However, after a couple days or weeks pass, you may come to dread your 6 a.m. alarm.

Is it really worth it to hit that snooze button to squeeze in a few more minutes of shut-eye before hitting the gym?

Some experts say yes. Within moderation, of course.

Why Sleep May Just Be Worth It

The benefits of getting plenty of sleep in order to maintain your desired weight have been at length, and the positive effects of more sleep and exercise are essential when it comes to creating a healthy lifestyle.

Less sleep means less energy. Researchers have found a correlation between poor sleep and more hunger hormones being released in the body, which could mean that the next time you decide to hit the gym in the morning on less-than-enough sleep, you may find yourself snacking more throughout the day.1

Studies have also found that sleeping less than the recommended seven or eight hours leads to a higher percent body fat.Sleeping more means that your body has stored more energy for you to expend the next time you’re in the weight room or on the treadmill, and can also lead to a more regulated appetite.

Getting to sleep earlier, so that you sleep longer, may be just what you need if you’ve found yourself dreading the blare of your early morning workout alarm. More energy from more sleep will start to show up when you exercise and step on the scale.

Everything In Moderation

While hitting that snooze button for just a few more minutes of sleep may be just what you need after a long week of workouts, some research suggests that it’s not always a bad thing to do from time to time.

If you find yourself feeling sleep deprived from the week’s activities, some scientists say that choosing an extra hour of sleep for a shorter workout isn’t so bad.3 If you find yourself getting less than six hours of sleep each night, skipping the gym will definitely help regulate your body.

As long as you make up for lost gym time and sleep, your body will thank you in the long run. (However, if you’re looking to shed ten pounds before the end of the month, maybe don’t skip that morning gym session for more sleep.)

Sleep Vs. Sweat

Ultimately, it all comes down to your body’s needs. If the thought of getting out of bed for yet another workout feels like too much, maybe take it easy. While it’s important to make sure your body is getting the food, exercise, and sleep that it needs, pushing yourself too hard can be much more detrimental than an extra hour or two of sleep will be in the long run.
