Ghrelin tells the brain when it's time to eat while Leptin tells the brain when you have eaten enough. Lack of sleep will cause the production of these hormones to become unstable, therefore leading to overeating.

 

Sleep deprivation also makes you tired and reduces your ability to perform physical activities. This will make you gain weight if you are overeating and not burning enough calories. Higher levels of insulin is produced when you do not get enough sleep, and this improves fat storage and increases the risk of you getting diabetes.

 

Central Nervous System

Under sleeping affects the central nervous system, which is the information center of the body. Sleeping well is important to keep your nervous system working properly. Under sleeping will seriously affect how your nervous system sends and receives information. While you are asleep, nerve cells in your brain form pathways that helps you to retain new information that you have learned. Under sleeping leads to mental exhaustion and poor mental performance. Your concentration coordination will also be affected. Your body will delay sending and receiving signals, thereby making you sluggish.

Under sleeping affects your emotional state and makes you have mood swings and become less patient. Your decision-making will also be hampered, and your creativity will be stifled. Hallucinations can start to occur if this continues for a long time, and you may experience mania if you have a history of bi-polar disorder.
