Sleep and weight seem to be inextricably linked when it comes to many bodily functions, and that includes the thyroid. This gland may seem small, but it contributes to a large amount of our body’s ability to regulate itself.

What Does The Thyroid Do?

The thyroid is a part of the endocrine system. It sits right at the base of the neck, below the Adam’s apple, and is responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism.1 The thyroid creates two essential hormones from the various foods we eat: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These two hormones travel throughout the rest of the body in order to help it function.2

As we age, our body changes. Middle age can often bring about various thyroid issues, including hyperthyroidism, due to hormone levels changing. Hyperthyroidism occurs with an overactive thyroid gland, and can contribute to other bodily issues like loss of sleep and weight gain.

The Thyroid’s Relationship To Sleep And Weight

Because the thyroid regulates the body’s metabolism, hormonal changes in the gland greatly contribute to weight gain. Those with thyroid issues were found to have lower or higher metabolic rates within the body, depending on the thyroid’s activity. Higher metabolic rates were found to cause weight gain in patients due to more metabolic hormones running throughout the body and fluid buildup on the kidneys.3

Thyroidal issues can also contribute to sleep issues like insomnia, sleep apnea, and more. This is because when the thyroid produces too much of its hormones, it also affects other bodily functions and causes them to speed up. In addition to weight gain, some patients might experience more anxiety or jitters, or trouble getting to sleep.4

This gland may seem small, but it as you can see, it has incredibly large effects on the body’s overall ability to function. If you suspect that you’re having thyroid problems, consult your primary care physician.

Dealing With Hyperthyroidism

Firstly, if you have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, it’s important to listen to your doctor’s advice. Follow the medication requirements and any other dietary needs. If your hyperthyroidism isn’t severe, adopting a new diet and exercise regimen could be key to keeping it under control.

An easy way to get started is to watch your calorie intake. However, instead of harshly cutting back on calories altogether, it’s suggested that seeking to cut about 1,000 daily calories out of your diet is the healthiest way to go about dieting.5 Cutting out too many calories while dealing with hyperthyroidism could only contribute to more weight gain.

Other natural remedies include starting a sugar-free diet, making sure you’re getting plenty of vitamin B (either through supplements or foods like tuna, asparagus, cheese, milk, and eggs), and probiotics are a great way to regulate your thyroid.

Understanding the way our bodies function is essential when it comes to taking care of them. Thyroid issues can begin to appear as our bodies continue to age, so it’s important to check in with your doctor every once in a while, to make sure it’s doing what it’s supposed to.
